antique-child-portrait-oil-painting-96756
Antique Child Portrait Oil Painting, Early 1800s, Large, Gold Framed

A large and charming and wonderfully intimate French provincial portrait dating from circa 1820, depicting a young red-haired child dressed in a beautiful blue costume with an oversized white lace collar, holding a small bouquet of flowers. Seated against a richly coloured red upholstered chair, the child has an endearing expression that gives the painting a remarkable sense of personality. Recently professionally cleaned and relined, the portrait is presented in an attractive antique gilt frame.

During the early 19th century, portrait painting was increasingly commissioned by prosperous families outside the major artistic centres of Paris. These provincial portraits often possess a particularly appealing directness, combining the formal conventions of fashionable portraiture with a more personal and sometimes wonderfully unconventional approach to depicting their subjects. Children were frequently portrayed holding flowers, toys or other small objects, which could serve as symbols of innocence, youth and family affection.

Good restored antique condition. The painting has recently been professionally cleaned and relined, preserving the historic canvas and refreshing the painted surface. The antique gilt frame retains an attractive aged patina with expected rubbing, marks and small areas of wear to the gilded decoration.

French Provincial School
Circa 1820
Oil on canvas
Portrait of a young child holding flowers
Artist currently unidentified
Recently professionally cleaned and relined
Antique gilt frame

Sizing incl Frame:
Height: 29.92 inch (76cm)
Width: 25.20 inch (64cm)
Depth: 2.76 inch (7cm)

Sizing Painting:
Height: 24.02 inch (61cm)
Width: 19.69 inch (50cm)

FREE International Shipping

Insurance:
All products are shipped in good boxes and very well packaged.

All products are shipped fully insured for international shipping.
