The elaborate antique gilt frame retains a beautiful historic patina with expected rubbing, darkening, marks and small areas of wear to the gilded ornamentation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWillem Frederik Hulk (1852–1922)\u003cbr\u003eBorn in Amsterdam in 1852, Willem Frederik Hulk belonged to a distinguished Anglo-Dutch family of painters. He was the son of the celebrated marine painter Abraham Hulk Senior (1813–1897), who provided his early artistic training, and the brother of fellow painter Abraham Hulk Jr. Following his father’s relocation to England, Hulk spent much of his career there, moving to England around 1870 and settling in Shere, Surrey, in 1882. He became particularly well known for his pastoral landscapes and paintings of cattle, finding inspiration in the quiet rural scenery of southern England. Hulk exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1876 and 1898, as well as at the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
