antique-female-portrait-oil-painting-62776
Antique Female Portrait Oil Painting | Montparnasse Frame

A beautifully romantic turn-of-the-century portrait of a young woman, her softly curled hair framed by a delicate white bonnet and her expression wonderfully warm and engaging. Painted in a restrained palette of earthy browns, soft ivory and muted green, the portrait has an intimate, almost dreamlike quality. It is presented in a hand-carved wooden Montparnasse frame, with a wonderfully distressed cream and gold finish.

There is something particularly appealing about the unfinished quality of the composition. While the face has been carefully observed, the clothing and surrounding background are handled much more freely, gradually dissolving into warm shades of umber, ochre and muted green. The sitter’s clothing and hairstyle recall the fashions of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, suggesting that the painting may have been conceived as a romantic historical portrait or character study, rather than a contemporary likeness.

The contrast between the carefully rendered face and the loosely suggested costume gives the painting a wonderfully spontaneous character, with the feeling of an intimate artist’s study.

Good antique condition with age-related surface character consistent with its period.
The carved wooden frame retains historic patina, with rubbing, small paint losses in the cream liner and gold decoration that contribute beautifully to its character and age.

Sizing (Incl Frame)
Height: 32.28 inch (82cm)
Width: 24.41 inch (62cm)
Depth: 2.56 inch (6.5cm)

Sizing Painting:
Height: 25.59 inch (65cm)
Width: 18.11 inch (46cm)
FREE International Shipping

FREE International Shipping

Insurance:
All products are shipped in good boxes and very well packaged.

All products are shipped fully insured for international shipping.
