This intimate forest study reveals a quieter side of Marioton’s work, depicting a shaded woodland stream beneath a dense canopy of trees. Signed lower right and presented in a handsome antique gold frame. We were told this landscape came directly from the family estate of Marioton, likely painted originally for his own home rather than to be put in market. A narrow woodland stream or pond crosses the foreground, surrounded by mossy banks, undergrowth and mature trees. Heavy branches arch across the upper part of the painting, enclosing the view and creating the feeling of a secluded corner of the forest. The palette is dominated by earthy greens, olive, brown and grey, with small touches of brighter foliage catching the filtered light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAbout Jean Alfred Marioton (1864–1903):\u003cbr\u003eJean Alfred Marioton (1864–1903) was born and died in Paris. He studied with some of the most prominent academic painters of his generation, including Jean-Léon Gérôme, Ernest Meissonier, William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. He competed for the Prix de Rome and received the second Grand Prix in painting in 1887 for The Death of Themistocles. He subsequently exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1887 and 1903. Marioton became particularly associated with mythological subjects, the human figure and large decorative schemes, including painted ceilings. One of his major mythological paintings, Ulysses and Nausicaa of 1888, is today in the collection of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
