The antique frame retains a particularly attractive historic patina, with rubbing, marks, darkening and areas of wear and loss to the decorative finish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAbout Jean Alfred Marioton (1864–1903):\u003cbr\u003eJean Alfred Marioton (1864–1903) was born and died in Paris. He studied with some of the most prominent academic painters of his generation, including Jean-Léon Gérôme, Ernest Meissonier, William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury. He competed for the Prix de Rome and received the second Grand Prix in painting in 1887 for The Death of Themistocles. He subsequently exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1887 and 1903. Marioton became particularly associated with mythological subjects, the human figure and large decorative schemes, including painted ceilings. One of his major mythological paintings, Ulysses and Nausicaa of 1888, is today in the collection of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
