antique-french-portrait-of-a-man-19th-16320
Antique French Portrait of a Man, 19th Century, Heavy Gold Frame

An exceptional mid-19th-century French portrait, depicting a distinguished older gentleman against a wonderfully dark, restrained background. Painted on wood panel and recently professionally cleaned and revarnished, the portrait is particularly striking in its superb antique gilt frame, with multiple layers of classical ornament surrounding the intimate composition.

There is a wonderful seriousness to his expression. Rather than presenting an idealised society portrait, the artist has concentrated on the individuality of the sitter, particularly his deep-set eyes, strong brow and slightly weathered complexion. The result is a portrait with considerable presence despite its relatively intimate scale.

Very good restored antique condition. The painting has recently been professionally cleaned and revarnished, refreshing the painted surface while retaining its historic character. The exceptional antique gilt frame retains a beautiful aged patina with expected rubbing, marks, darkening and small areas of wear and loss consistent with its age.

Sizing incl Frame:
Height: 19.69 inch (50cm)
Width: 17.72 inch (45cm)
Depth: 2.76 inch (7cm)

Sizing Painting:
Height: 9.45 inch (24cm)
Width: 7.48 inch (19cm)

FREE International Shipping

Insurance:
All products are shipped in good boxes and very well packaged.

All products are shipped fully insured for international shipping.
