Two small figures walk along a winding country path in the foreground, bringing a delightful sense of life to this romantic rural scene. Presented in a simple antique gilt frame with a beautifully warm, aged patina.

During the first half and middle decades of the 19th century, French artists developed an increasing fascination with the picturesque countryside, particularly landscapes incorporating medieval ruins, historic architecture, rivers and wooded scenery. The Romantic movement encouraged painters to look beyond grand classical subjects and explore the atmosphere and history of the landscape itself. Ancient towers, village churches, bridges and fortified buildings became particularly appealing subjects, often representing the enduring presence of France’s medieval past within an otherwise peaceful rural setting.

Good antique condition with visible age-related craquelure and surface character consistent with its period. The antique gilt frame retains a beautiful historic patina with expected rubbing, marks, darkening and areas of wear to the gilded surface.

French School
Mid-19th century
Oil painting
Romantic landscape with medieval tower and river
Artist currently unidentified
Antique gilt frame

Sizing incl Frame:
Height: 14.57 inch (37cm)
Width: 17.72 inch (45cm)
Depth: 1.18 inch (3cm)

Sizing Painting:
Height: 12.80 inch (32.5cm)
Width: 15.94 inch (40.5cm)
FREE International Shipping

Insurance:
All products are shipped in good boxes and very well packaged.

All products are shipped fully insured for international shipping.
