A powerful and atmospheric 19th-century pastoral painting from the Belgian School, depicting a pair of cows in a rural setting. Painted at a generous scale and recently professionally cleaned and varnished, this oil on canvas retains visible age and character, including authentic wear in the lower right corner that enhances its artistic presence.

This substantial rural painting presents two cows standing quietly in a pastoral landscape, rendered with strong observation and naturalistic detail. The artist has paid close attention to anatomy, weight, and texture, from the tension in the legs to the soft modulation of light across hide and ground. The restrained palette of warm browns, creams, and muted greens is characteristic of 19th-century animal painting from Belgium and northern France, where pastoral subjects were treated with realism and dignity rather than sentimentality.

The painting has recently been to a professional restorer for careful cleaning, consolidation, and the application of a new varnish, which has brought clarity and depth back to the surface. There is, however, visible wear and loss in the lower right corner. This area has been stabilised but intentionally not fully reconstructed.

The work is presented in its original rustic carved frame, whose aged surface and patina complement the painting’s pastoral character and reinforce its 19th-century origin.
Good antique condition overall.
