19th Century Belgian Windmill Landscape – Antique Oil Painting in Gold Frame by Charles Leickert (1816–1907)
This elegant Dutch landscape painting by Charles Henri Joseph Leickert (1816–1907) captures a serene waterside scene, likely set in the Netherlands, with boats resting along a calm canal and figures moving quietly along the shore. Leickert’s handling of light is particularly refined. Subtle tonal transitions in the sky and water reflect his sensitivity to changing conditions, a quality for which he is especially known. While celebrated for his winter scenes, works like this demonstrate his equally strong command of river and town landscapes.
The palette is harmonious and natural, with cool blues, soft greys, and warm earth tones working together to create a peaceful, timeless scene. His brushwork is controlled yet lively, giving the painting both structure and movement.
Good antique condition consistent with age. Light surface wear and patina. The frame shows age-related wear. Executed in oil on canvas, the painting is presented in an ornate gilt frame, enhancing its presence and complementing the richness of the composition.

Charles Henri Joseph Leickert was a Dutch landscape painter born in Brussels in 1816, later active primarily in The Hague and Amsterdam. Leickert became particularly known for his landscapes, where he masterfully captured the subtle effects of light in early morning and evening skies. However, he also produced a wide range of cityscapes and canal views, many of which reflect everyday life in the Netherlands with remarkable clarity and calm. In 1856, he became a member of the Royal Academy of Amsterdam, affirming his reputation within the Dutch art world.
