A serene late-19th-century French landscape by Pierre Marie Alfred Montader (1855–1929), depicting the Bordeaux region and the Dordogne River at St-Projet-le-Désert. Painted in soft atmospheric layers, the scene captures mist rising over distant mountains and the gentle light falling across the river’s calm surface. Presented in its beautiful period gilt frame with original title plaque.

This elegant landscape by Pierre Marie Alfred Montader, a French painter known for lyrical regional views, beautifully portrays the tranquillity of the Dordogne valley, just outside Bordeaux. The composition opens onto a wide, glassy stretch of river flanked by forested banks and distant blue-grey mountains. Montader’s sensitive palette, soft greens, cool blues, and diffused mist, creates a sense of depth and peaceful stillness.

The original brass frame plaque reads “La Dordogne à St-Projet-le-Désert”, anchoring the work to a real location in southwestern France. Montader painted throughout the provinces, and this scene is characteristic of his atmospheric approach to rural landscapes.

Condition:
Good antique condition. Natural craquelure throughout. Surface displays age-appropriate patina. Frame retains its original gilding with expected wear along the edges, enhancing its character. The painting has been to a restorer for a secondary canvas added sometime within the last 50 years. The painting has also recently been professionally cleaned.
