About the artist:
Sophie Pir (1858-1936), born in Saint-Josse-Ten-Noode, Brussels in 1858, studied under the prominent Belgian Orientalist painter and director of the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Jean François Portaels (1818-1895). Initially focused on still life, Pir eventually specialized in genre scenes and dog portraits. Notably, she was selected as one of the contributing illustrators, alongside renowned dog artists Arthur Wardle, Maud Earl, Frances Fairman, and R.H. Moore, for Henri van Bylandt's authoritative canine book, *Dogs of All Nations*. Pir also painted portraits of van Bylandt's Griffons.
