Antique French Oil Painting, Ballerina in Artist Atelier, Framed
A wonderfully atmospheric French Post-Impressionist painting attributed to Marcel Cosson (1878–1956), depicting a ballet dancer backstage at the theatre, studying her reflection in a large gilt mirror. Surrounded by theatrical costumes, sculptures and the intimate clutter of a dressing room, the painting beautifully captures the private world of performers away from the stage. Marked with the artist’s name on the reverse and presented in an attractive antique frame.
This charming French painting depicts an intimate moment backstage at the theatre, a subject particularly associated with the work of Marcel Cosson. At the centre of the composition, a young ballerina stands before a large oval mirror, dressed in a delicate white tutu. Seen from behind, she appears to be adjusting her costume or examining her reflection, which reveals her face and the front of her dress. The contrast between the dancer’s pale costume and the richly coloured surroundings is particularly appealing. Deep greens, warm browns and touches of gold and crimson create a theatrical atmosphere, while the loose, expressive brushwork gives the scene a wonderful sense of movement.
Good antique condition with age-related surface character consistent with its period. The antique frame retains an attractive historic patina with expected rubbing, marks and areas of wear to the decorative finish.
Marcel Cosson (1878–1956)
Marcel Cosson was a French painter associated with the Post-Impressionist tradition, particularly admired for his depictions of Parisian life, ballet dancers, theatre interiors and elegant social gatherings. His work frequently explored the world of entertainment, capturing dancers both onstage and during quieter moments of preparation and rehearsal. Rather than concentrating exclusively on the spectacle of a performance, Cosson was fascinated by the atmosphere surrounding it: dressing rooms, mirrors, costumes and the everyday routines of performers.
The composition also recalls the longstanding fascination with ballet and theatrical life in French painting, particularly the work of Edgar Degas, although Cosson developed his own more colourful and expressive interpretation of these subjects.
