About Otto Eerelman 1839-1926
Otto Eerelman was born in Groningen in 1839. After studying at the Minerva Academy, he first went to Antwerp and Paris in 1864, before returning to Groningen in 1867. He worked at the Minerva Academy until 1874, after which he left for Brussels and the following year for The Hague. He lived there from 1875 to 1902, during which time he made several paintings for the royal family. After a stay in Arnhem he returned to Groningen in 1907 and lived there until his death in 1926.

Eerelman’s work is celebrated for its lifelike realism, whether it’s the regal elegance of horses, the playful charm of dogs, or the serene beauty of still lifes. These Eerelman horses are celebrated within the equestrian community in the Netherlands, hanging in museums and public buildings throughout the country. His work was published in a book named Paardenrassen by E.A.L. Quadekker. The book used Eerelman's work on different horse breeds standing in the same pose to this horse to showcase structural differences in the breeds.
Condition: The painting of the horse is in good condition for it's age and has been professionally restored and re-canvased within the last 20 years. The heavy antique gilt frame has had some repairs in the past.
