This antique folk art oil painting shows a very French prize pigeon, dating from 1928 and signed in lower left corner. This French racing pigeon has some of his winning races mentioned in underneath. This striking oil painting depicts a champion racing pigeon proudly posed on a rocky perch, with a soft landscape in the background. The detailed inscription below records the bird’s victories with the Union Colombophile of Saint-Nicolas, Belgium. Including a 1st prize at St. Denis (Paris), and names its owner, A. Dubois. Painted as a commemoration of sporting success, such works form part of a unique Belgian folk-art tradition, celebrating the prestige of prized racing pigeons. A highly collectible and historically significant piece for pigeon racing and folk art enthusiasts.
For anyone that doesn't know, the French and Belgians were crazy for racing pigeons in the late 19th and early 20th Century. Netherlands and Germany also, but not like the French and Belgians. There's still a fanatic group of pigeons racing enthusiasts active today.
This 19th century painting comes in a lovely original gold frame with a tulip motif. This painting has recently been to the restorer for a professional cleaning and new varnish applied. The frame has had some repairs, but relatively minor. This heirloom piece of art is ready to hang for another 100 years.
