French Antique Portrait Oil Painting of a Young Girl
A beautiful small antique French oil painting of a little girl in her pretty dress from around the year 1890. This antique painted is painted by the French artist Charles Bertrand d' Entraygues (1850-1929) in the middle right. The signature is quite faint but it's there and pretty clear. He also signed the back of the painting.
About Charles Bertrand d' Entraygues (1850-1929)
Charles Bertrand d'Entraygues begin artistic training in Toulouse, then in 1871 he attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris where his teacher was Isidore Pils. In 1875 d'Entraygues made his debut at the Salon with exhibiting L'Embarras du choix.
The painter was quickly noted for his style of genre scenes close to popular imagery with a humorous touch that depicts family interiors, children's games, and anecdotal street scenes, which would be the hallmark of his style throughout his career. He exhibited La Table des enfants at the Salon of 1882, Enfants jouer in 1884. He was noted for his paintings representing mischievous choirboys "Monsieur d'Entraygues renders his subjects with inimitable finesse. Instead of cleaning the rectory like they were supposed to, the altar boys teach a parakeet to sing Au Clair de la lune. Each of their boyish faces is priceless . With a few exceptions, d'Entraygues exhibited at the Salons almost every year until 1906. In 1899, he won an honorable mention for La Musique doucet les mœurs. He also managed to gain appreciation from American art collectors; one of his paintings, La Fin de journée (Refreshments after Toil , 1887), was selected for exhibition at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago and included in the 1894 edition of Famous Paintings of the World.
