19th Century French Dark Floral Still Life. Attributed to Germain Théodore Ribot (1845–1893)
A richly atmospheric dark and moody 19th Century floral still life, attributed to the French painter Germain Théodore Ribot (1845–1893), painted in the second half of the 19th century. Moody, restrained, and beautifully composed, this smaller scale oil painting is presented in its original period gilt frame bearing a Ribot attribution plaque.
This evocative floral still life depicts a modest bouquet arranged in a glass vessel, emerging quietly from a deep, shadowed background. The composition is intentionally subdued, allowing light, texture, and contrast to create drama rather than colour excess.
The painting is unsigned, however it is attributed to Germain Théodore Ribot based on style, subject, and handling. Ribot was renowned for his dark-toned still lifes and genre scenes, often compared to Spanish and Dutch Old Masters for his use of chiaroscuro and restrained palette.
The painting is housed in its original gilt frame, which retains an attribution plaque naming Germain Ribot. While the painting itself is unsigned, the presence of the plaque and the stylistic coherence make this a compelling and credible attribution.
