Antique French Painted Harpsichord Panel in Ornate Frame.
A beautiful framed panel from the top of an Antique French Harpsichord, decorated with flowers and birds. We believe this piece would date from the 18th Century (1700-1800), it is likely French.
This piece has some signs of it's age like some cracks in the panel that developed over it's long life but that adds to it's charm. Very decorative piece. This piece is quite heavy and has been professionally restored and preserved within the last 20 years. The backside has quite an elaborate system to keep it intact and structurally sound. Please see all photos.
About the Harpsichord:
The French harpsichord flourished between the 17th and 18th centuries, becoming a key instrument in music of the era. Its development was influenced by earlier Italian designs, but French makers, particularly the Blanchet and Taskin families, crafted harpsichords with a distinctive warm, full tone. Flemish builders like the Ruckers family also impacted French harpsichord making. French harpsichords typically featured double manuals, allowing greater versatility in sound and dynamics. They became prized for their rich sound, complementing the ornate, elegant music of composers like François Couperin and Jean-Philippe Rameau. Notable makers like Jean-Henri Hemsch and Pascal Taskin further refined the instrument's tonal qualities, making them highly sought after in 18th century France.
