A richly textured French floral still life by Louis Darey (1863–1914), depicting roses painted with depth, warmth, and confident late-19th-century brushwork. A classic and elegant composition, presented in its original ornate gilt frame.

This beautifully executed floral still life showcases a bouquet of roses in shades of deep red, soft pink, and pale yellow, set against a warm, earthy background. Darey’s handling of paint is generous and expressive, with thick, confident brushstrokes that give the petals volume and vitality while maintaining a harmonious overall composition.nThe roses are arranged naturally rather than formally, allowing individual blooms to overlap and turn toward the light. Subtle highlights on the petals contrast with darker foliage and background tones, creating depth and a sense of quiet richness. The restrained palette and painterly surface place the work firmly within the tradition of late-19th-century French still-life painting.

Good antique condition. Paint surface remains stable and the painting has just been for a visit to our restorer for a professional cleaning and new varnish applied. The frame shows expected patina and minor wear, enhancing its period character. The painting is housed in its original ornate gilt frame, richly carved with foliate motifs and softened by a warm antique patina. The frame complements the depth of colour and texture in the painting and gives the work a strong decorative presence.

Artist Bio — Louis Darey (1863–1914)
Louis Darey was a French painter active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known primarily for his animal portraiture, landscapes and floral compositions. Working within the academic tradition while embracing a looser, more painterly touch, Darey focused on colour, texture, and atmosphere rather than strict precision to the subject. His works reflect the enduring popularity of floral painting in France during this period, when such compositions were valued for both their decorative appeal and technical skill. Darey’s paintings are appreciated today for their warmth, confident brushwork, and timeless subject matter.
