Antique Seascape Oil Painting – 19th Century Coastal, Gold Framed
A beautifully atmospheric late 19th century Dutch harbour scene at dusk, signed C. Lucas, depicting sailing vessels beneath a glowing moon. Recently professionally cleaned and revarnished, the painting has regained wonderful depth and clarity while retaining all of its antique character. Several sailing vessels drift through the darkening bay, their silhouettes softened by the fading light, while a luminous moon hangs low above the distant shoreline. Its reflection stretches gently across the water, creating the subtle silver glow that gives the painting its wonderful sense of atmosphere.
Dutch painters had a particularly strong tradition of maritime subjects, and this work continues that legacy into the late nineteenth century with a more romantic emphasis on mood, changing light, and the stillness of dusk.
Very good antique condition following professional cleaning and revarnishing. Light age-related craquelure and minor surface wear remain consistent with the painting’s age. The antique gilt frame displays an attractive patina and light cosmetic wear.
