Circa 1860 - Antique Normandy Cow Oil Painting on a Calvados Farm

This antique oil painting, dating from the mid-19th century, (Circa 1860) presents a brown and white cow Norman French Cow in a field next to an apple orchard. The colours and style are excellent.

Quite a unique piece of art for Cow paintings as the artist did executed the painting in his own style rather than painting the cow in Dutch school as did dominate the rest of Europe when it comes to cows and farms. We do see the cow resting under a tree with the apple trees in the background. The cow is still wearing his harness as it's clear he was working the farm on this lovely summers day. We are lucky enough to know a little bit about this painting. It has been hanging in the family home for nearly 160 years and now with the family completely moved out it has come to market. The family home was a Calvados farm in the Normandy farm town of "Annebault". Calvados is an Apple Brandy that is quite popular in Normandy. This area that did have quite a lot of wealth during the 18th and 19th Century and the area was full of excellent artists that would have vacation homes close by. Also artists that would spend time in the area to paint the French elite on summer holidays. Monet had his beach house about 20 minutes train ride from this location.

The painting and frame has some signs of its age but in overall good condition. The painting has recently been for a visit to the restorer for a professional cleaning and new varnish applied. This painting is ready to be hung on the wall and enjoyed as an Heirloom in your family for future generations.
