Antique Dog Oil Painting of a Playing Terrier Dog by Dutch Female Artist Anna Maria Kruijff (1870-1946)

A wonderful circa 1900 animal scene by the Dutch artist Anna Maria Kruijff (1870–1946), depicting a curious dog being mischievous in a woman's closet. The composition has a subtle storytelling quality, with the dog’s posture and focus bringing a sense of movement and personality to the scene. The soft handling of light, combined with the warm, muted palette, reflects the refined naturalism typical of Dutch animal painters of the period.

A small personal note from her Bio below, one the artists (Anna) teachers and mentors is George Hendrik Breitner. For me, he's one of the greatest ever and his "Girl in a White Kimono" is perfect. I go see it at the Rijksmuseum here in Amsterdam at least once a month!

The painting is in good antique condition consistent with age. Surface craquelure and minor wear visible. Frame with age-related wear and patina. The painting is presented in a richly decorated period frame, complementing its warm tones and historic character.

Artist Bio — Anna Maria Kruijff (1870–1946)
Anna Maria Kruijff was a Dutch painter, draughtswoman, and illustrator born in Sassenheim in 1870. She trained at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and studied under artists including Edouard Taurel, later mentored by George Hendrik Breitner. Kruijff worked across a wide range of subjects, including animals, landscapes, portraits, and illustrated works, and was also active as a sculptor. She exhibited with prominent Dutch artist societies such as Arti et Amicitiae and the Laren-Blaricum artists’ association, and participated in notable exhibitions including De Vrouw 1813–1913. Her connection with Artis Zoo in Amsterdam provided inspiration for many of her animal studies. She later settled in the artists’ village of Laren, where she remained active throughout her life. Kruijff’s work reflects a blend of academic training and sensitive observation, particularly evident in her engaging depictions of animals.
