Dated 1878 - Pastel Portrait of French Basset Hounds (Basset Artésien Normand)
Antique Dog Portrait, Antique Hunting Dogs Painting, Antique Pet Portrait, Pastel Pet Portrait, Dog Breed Portrait in Frame Behind Glass
A stunning antique pastel dog portrait of French Basset Hounds, more specifically the Basset Artésien Normand which were popular in France around 1850–1900. This 19th century (Dated 1878) portrait is made with pastel. This original artwork is framed behind glass. The work is very finely executed, with a high level of realism in the fur texture, eyes, and collars. This kind of naturalistic animal portraiture was popular in France around 1870–1910, especially for hunting dogs (bassets, hounds, spaniels). The oval mount and the soft pastel blending suggest a formal commission, often intended for a country estate or as a keepsake of valued hunting dogs.
The initials “B D” with the number "78" in the lower right do look like two clean letters rather than a monogram, also suggesting this was done as a commission for an estate. We had the pastel reset and glass on the inside cleaned by a professional restorer.
It does look like it was reframed in the early to mid-20th Century with the framers mark on the back.
In good antique condition, please see all photos.
