A striking 1930s Parisian interior backstage at the Montmartre cabaret, painted by French artist Reine Virely (1906–1946), later Virely-Colmez after marriage. Paris School in style, A vivid and intimate glimpse into the artistic life of Montmartre, presented in a richly textured period frame.

This captivating 1930s painting transports us backstage in the vibrant cabaret world of Montmartre, the beating heart of Parisian artistic life in the early 20th century. Reine Virely captures not the spectacle of performance, but the intimate preparation behind it. The backstage theatre setting, filtered daylight, and floral accents lend warmth and authenticity to the composition. The brushwork is confident and expressive, with subtle tonal shifts that give depth to skin, fabric, and interior space. Traditional style to the teachings of the Paris School in the early 20th Century.

Painted during the 1930s, this work reflects the energy of Montmartre’s cabaret culture at a time when artists, dancers, and musicians defined the bohemian spirit of Paris. Rather than a staged theatrical scene, this feels observed and personal, an insider’s view into creative life.

Very good vintage condition with age-related surface wear consistent with a 1930s work. The paint surface is stable. The frame shows patina and minor wear appropriate to age. The painting is executed in oil on canvas and housed in an ornate period frame with textured detailing and aged patina that complements the warmth of the palette.

Artist Bio – Reine Virely (1906–1946)
Reine Virely was a French painter active in the first half of the 20th century. Born in 1906, she later signed some works under her married name Virely-Colmez. Her work often explored intimate interior scenes and the lives of women, particularly within artistic and bohemian circles. Active during the vibrant interwar period, Virely’s paintings reflect the cultural richness of Paris, especially the creative atmosphere of Montmartre. Though her career was relatively short, ending with her death in 1946, her works capture a sensitive and compelling perspective on feminine presence and artistic life in early 20th-century Paris.
