An impressive 19th Century antique oil painting depicting the Assassination of Henri I, Duke of Guise by Henry III in 1588. In the late 19th Century and early 20th the French became quite interested in re-telling the historical tales of their history. Artists had started telling these stories through art.

History of this Scene:
The assassination of Henri I, Duke of Guise, by King Henry III of France occurred on December 23, 1588, during the French Wars of Religion. Henri I, leader of the powerful Catholic League, had become a significant threat to the king's authority. The Duke's influence had grown so strong that he effectively controlled Paris and sought to overthrow Henry III.

To eliminate this threat, Henry III lured Henri I to the Château de Blois under the pretense of a meeting. Once there, the king's guards ambushed and killed him. The following day, Henri’s brother, Louis II, Cardinal of Guise, was also murdered. This act of regicide shocked France, deepening the religious conflict and leading to Henry III’s eventual assassination by a fanatical monk in 1589. The death of the Duke of Guise marked a crucial turning point, weakening the Catholic League but plunging France further into chaos.
