Dated 1909 French Floral Still Life. Oil Painting in Ornate Gilt Frame
A richly painted French floral still life dated 1909 and signed in the upper left. Depicting flowers arranged in a ceramic vessel and scattered across a tabletop. Painted with confident, expressive brushwork and presented in a superbly ornate gilt frame.
This vibrant early-20th-century French still life captures a loosely arranged bouquet of flowers resting in and around a ceramic pot. Red blossoms dominate the composition, complemented by softer pinks, pale yellow blooms, and deep green and brown foliage. The artist has allowed petals and leaves to spill naturally across the surface with a wonderful impasto for depth in pedals, giving the scene a sense of movement and immediacy.
Dated 1909, the painting reflects a moment when traditional French still-life subjects were being approached with greater freedom and painterly confidence. Broad, textured brushstrokes animate the flowers and foliage, while the background remains subdued, allowing the colours to stand forward with warmth and depth. The painting is housed in its original ornate gilt frame, deeply carved with scrolling foliate motifs. The darker patina of the frame enhances the depth of the painting and provides a striking contrast to the lively floral composition. This painting has recently been to the restorer for a professional cleaning and new varnish. In good antique condition.
