Dog Portrait by Jules Chardigny (1842–1892) 19th Century French French Terrier Painting in Gold Frame

A delightful 19th-century dog portrait by French artist Jules Chardigny (1842–1892), finely painted and presented in a richly carved frame. The sitter appears to be a French terrier captured in crisp profile with expressive realism.

This wonderfully characterful portrait shows the terrier in left-facing profile, rendered with lively brushwork and the warm, naturalistic detail typical of French animal painters of the 19th century. The wiry fur, alert ears, and intelligent amber eye give the dog a vivid presence, as in mid-observation.

Jules Chardigny initialed the work in the lower left corner with his distinctive J.C. monogram. The portrait demonstrates his talent for capturing individuality and subtle emotion in animal subjects, a specialty for which he became known. The painting sits in an exceptional period gilt frame, decorated with palmettes, foliage, and beading. In good antique condition. The wood panel has been split and repaired at sometime in the past. Frame shows warm patina and minor losses typical of 19th-century. The painting was recently at our restorer for a professional cleaning and new varnish applied.

Artist Bio — Jules Chardigny (1842–1892)
Jules Chardigny was a French painter active in the second half of the 19th century, known especially for his portraits and animal studies. Working in Paris during a period of growing interest in domestic animal portraiture, Chardigny developed a reputation for his sensitive handling of dogs, horses, and small mammals. Chardigny exhibited in the Paris Salon, where his careful observation, refined technique, and naturalistic approach earned him critical recognition. His works occasionally appear in French and European collections, prized for their charm and intimate character. Though he died young in 1892, his paintings remain admired for their lively brushwork and affectionate portrayal of the animals he closely studied.
