About Otto Helmut Gerster (1907-1982):
A quiet draftsman since childhood, Otto Gerster worked as an advertising graphic artist and textile and fashion illustrator for various print media in Berlin in the 1920s. In 1928 he began studying painting and graphics under Emil Rudolf Weiss at the art academy in Berlin-Charlottenburg, where he became a master student under Ferdinand Spiegel in 1936 .
He soon earned his living as a freelance artist, receiving commissions for book illustrations, applied graphics, large-format paintings and the contemporary "monumental design" of halls for exhibitions and trade fairs. In 1933 he received the Albrecht Dürer Prize from the city of Nuremberg and in 1939 was appointed to the master school for creative crafts in the Hanseatic city of Cologne to take over the class for monumental and wall painting.
In 2020, during the renovation of the former Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum on Ubierring in Cologne found large-scale graffiti by Gerster, hidden behind tuff stone slabs on the facade . Since only a few graffiti by Gerster have survived - they were often painted over - this discovery is considered "particularly significant". The murals were presumably created in 1948 after the museum was converted into a venue for the Theatre and the Arts. The covering panels were probably installed when the building opened again as a museum in 1967. Murals by Gerster had already been found in Duisburg Central Station in 2009.
