About the Artist, George Pletser (1871-1942):
Jurgen "George" Pletser (Rotterdam, June 25, 1871 – October 16, 1942) was a trailblazing Dutch painter celebrated for his daring and vibrant style.
Pletser studied at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts. Known as a headstrong and independent artist, he focused on still lifes but also painted striking landscapes and figure pieces. His bold use of color and dramatic light-and-shadow contrasts brought his often-dark compositions to life, making his work unforgettable. He was an active member of the Circle of Visual Artists R33 and the Rotterdam Association of Art and Crafts, exhibiting his work widely. Though primarily based in Rotterdam, Pletser also left his mark in Paris and Berlin. Pletser’s art can be admired at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, which honored him with a retrospective exhibition and catalog after his passing.
