Antique French Portrait of the Artist’s Wife and Daughter by Emmanuel Fougerat (1869–1958). French School, Early 20th Century

A rare and intimate double portrait by the French painter Emmanuel Fougerat (1869–1958), depicting his wife and whom we believe to be his daughter. The same sitter, the woman shown on the left, appears in a documented Emmanuel Fougerat portrait held in the Musée d’Orsay, confirming her identity and importance within the artist’s circle. The last image in the carousel is the painting of the Mrs. Fougerat at the Musee d'Orsay.

This expressive and beautifully painted portrait features two female sitters: the artist’s wife in the foreground, rendered with calm, classical dignity, and their daughter just behind her, slightly turned toward the viewer. The composition is incredibly tender, revealing the closeness of the family and the painter’s deep familiarity with his subjects.

Painted in the early decades of the 20th century, the work demonstrates Fougerat’s strong academic grounding, careful modelling of the face, subtle transitions of light and a restrained, harmonious palette. The atmospheric background and slightly shadowed edges add emotional depth, placing the emphasis entirely on the women’s expressions. The painting is housed in a grand period gilt frame, richly carved with rocaille and foliate ornamentation. The frame gives the work a museum-quality presence, reinforcing its significance as a personal and artistic document. This portrait is particularly notable because the Musée d’Orsay holds another Fougerat portrait of the same woman and explicitly identifies her as the artist’s wife. This painting forms a rare companion to a museum-recognised sitter, a strong point of interest for historians and lovers of French portraiture.

Artist Bio — Emmanuel Fougerat (1869–1958)
Emmanuel Fougerat was a French painter born in Angers in 1869 and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He became known for his refined portraits, interiors, and genre scenes, many of which were exhibited at the Paris Salon from the late 19th century onward. Fougerat’s work reflects the academic naturalism and psychological subtlety favoured by the French portrait tradition. The Musée d’Orsay holds a portrait by Fougerat of his wife, confirming the importance of his family as recurring subjects in his work. Other examples of his paintings appear in French regional museum collections. Fougerat worked well into the mid-20th century and died in 1958, leaving behind a thoughtful body of portraiture rooted in classical training and intimate observation.

Very good antique condition. Gentle craquelure and age wear consistent with an early 20th-century canvas. Frame shows warm patina and light imperfections appropriate to age.
