Antique French Barbizon Landscape Oil Painting – Pastoral Meadow with Cows, 19th Century, Gold Framed

A refined 19th-century French pastoral landscape in the Normandy countryside by Alexandre Thiollet, exhibited Salon artist and student of the Barbizon circle of French painters. A beautifully balanced countryside scene with grazing cattle and luminous autumn trees, presented in a richly moulded gold frame.

This atmospheric French landscape is the work of Alexandre Thiollet (1824–1895), a respected 19th-century painter known for his pastoral scenes and regular participation in the Paris Salon. The composition captures a peaceful rural moment: cattle grazing in sunlit meadowland, framed by tall autumnal trees glowing in warm golden tones. In the distance, a farmhouse nestles into the landscape beneath a gently clouded sky. Thiollet’s handling of light is particularly strong here, with soft illumination guiding the eye across the field and into the depth of the countryside.

His work reflects the influence of the Barbizon school, with careful attention to naturalistic light, seasonal atmosphere, and rural tranquility. The brushwork remains controlled yet expressive, especially in the foliage and sky.

Very good antique condition. Panel is stable. Minor age-related craquelure consistent with 19th-century works. The painting has recently been to a restorer for a professional cleaning and new varnish applied. Frame shows light wear and patina appropriate to age. The painting is housed in an impressive 19th-century gold frame with deep moulding and strong decorative presence, enhancing the richness of the pastoral palette.

Alexandre Thiollet (1824–1895) was a French landscape painter active in the second half of the 19th century. Born in Paris, he studied painting and became known for his pastoral scenes depicting cattle, farmland, and wooded countryside. Thiollet exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon, the most important official art exhibition in France during the 19th century. His Salon participation established him within the academic art world of his time and placed his work before collectors, critics, and fellow artists. His landscapes reflect the broader naturalist movement influenced by artists such as Corot and the Barbizon painters, with a particular emphasis on light, atmosphere, and rural serenity.
