Antique French Coastal Landscape – Chalk Cliffs at Étretat Norandy, 19th Century Oil Painting in Gold Framed
A beautifully atmospheric 1894 oil painting of Étretat in Normandy, capturing the dramatic white cliffs and tidal shoreline that inspired some of the most important French artists of the 19th century. A luminous and historically significant coastal scene presented in a rich period gilt frame. The towering chalk cliffs dominate the composition, their pale surfaces glowing against the soft blue sky. Below, a quiet tidal beach unfolds with scattered rocks, shallow pools, and a small fishing boat resting near the shoreline.
Étretat held enormous importance in French art during the second half of the 19th century. Artists were drawn to its changing light, dramatic geology, and open skies. The site became especially associated with the Impressionists, most notably Claude Monet, who painted the cliffs repeatedly in the 1880s and 1890s and had a summer home quite close by. The location symbolised modern landscape painting and the study of atmosphere, light, and natural form. By 1894, Étretat was firmly established as one of France’s most significant plein air destinations. This painting sits beautifully within that tradition, combining careful structure with soft atmospheric brushwork.
Very good antique condition with age-appropriate craquelure. The paint surface is stable and presents beautifully. Frame shows minor wear and patina consistent with age.The work is executed in oil on canvas and housed in an elegant gilt frame that complements the warm tones of sand and stone.
