Antique French Hunting Scene – Dogs with Deer, Oil Painting in Gold Gilt Frame

This evocative French hunting scene, painted on wood panel in the mid-19th century, captures a moment of tension at the heart of the chase. At the centre stands a stag, alert and poised, surrounded by a pack of hounds closing in from all sides. The composition is carefully arranged to heighten the drama, with the animal positioned as the focal point while the dogs create movement and energy around it.

The palette is warm and autumnal, with rich browns, greens, and ochres enhancing the natural setting and reinforcing the seasonal feel often associated with traditional hunts. The painting reflects the strong tradition of 19th century French sporting art, where such scenes combined narrative, movement, and a deep connection to rural life.

The painting is signed, though the signature is currently illegible. Very good antique condition. Recently professionally cleaned and revarnished. Minor age-related wear to the frame. It has recently undergone a professional restoration, including cleaning and a new varnish, which has revived the clarity, depth, and colour of the composition. Presented in an ornate gilt frame, complementing the richness and period character of the work.
