Artist Bio — Emmanuel Fougerat (1869–1958)
Emmanuel Fougerat was a French painter born in Angers in 1869 and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He became known for his refined portraits, interiors, and genre scenes, many of which were exhibited at the Paris Salon from the late 19th century onward. Fougerat’s work reflects the academic naturalism and psychological subtlety favoured by the French portrait tradition. The Musée d’Orsay holds a portrait by Fougerat of his wife, confirming the importance of his family as recurring subjects in his work, and examples of his paintings can also be found in French regional museum collections. He worked well into the mid-20th century and died in 1958, leaving behind a thoughtful body of portraiture rooted in classical training and intimate observation.
