This atmospheric oil painting with amazing colours and a very talented artistic hand, depicts a bustling quayside with sailing vessels moored against stone steps, overlooked by tall gabled houses and the distant spire of a great Gothic cathedral, likely inspired by Strasbourg. Figures in varied dress, including robed merchants suggestive of trade merchants, add an exotic note typical of mid-19th-century Romantic and Orientalist taste. Painters of the Alsace schools often combined recognisable landmarks with imaginative detail, creating evocative “capriccio” cityscapes. Preserved in a richly ornamented gilt frame, this work captures both the grandeur of the Alsatian river trade and the era’s fascination with cultural encounters.This original antique oil painting would be great in a living room, bedroom or as boys room decor. Comes in a stunning high quality frame. The frame has some signs of it's age. This painting has recently been to a restorer for a professional cleaning and new varnish applied.
