A beautiful French landscape by renowned French painter signed bottom left by Albert Bettannier (1851–1932), depicting a tranquil riverside scene in the Alsace region of France with figures and boats. A refined and historically significant antique oil painting. The painting and frame have recently been to a professional restorer for a full cleaning.

The composition is expansive and atmospheric. A green riverbank leads the eye toward calm waters where small boats drift gently, while bare trees line the horizon beneath a soft, clouded sky. The palette is natural and restrained, with subtle tonal shifts that reflect the quiet beauty of the landscape. The scene feels both observational and poetic, balancing realism with atmosphere in a way that draws the viewer into the stillness of the moment.

Good antique condition consistent with age. The painting shows natural craquelure and surface patina of the wood panel. The frame shows little wear wear appropriate to its age. Painted in oil on wood panel and presented in a richly detailed gilt frame, the work has strong decorative presence while also carrying important artistic context.

Artist Bio – Albert Bettannier (1851–1932)
Albert Bettannier was a French painter born in Metz in 1851, whose work is closely tied to the cultural and political history of Alsace-Lorraine following its annexation by Germany in 1871. Choosing French nationality in 1872, he relocated to Paris, where he would build his career. From 1881 onward, Bettannier exhibited regularly at the "Salon des Artistes Français", gaining recognition for works that reflected the emotional and national tensions surrounding the loss of Alsace-Lorraine. His paintings often explored themes of memory, identity, and patriotism, making him a distinctive voice within late 19th-century French art. His work was widely appreciated during his lifetime, and he was awarded the Légion d’Honneur in 1908, affirming his standing within the French artistic establishment. Today, Bettannier’s paintings are held in several important public collections, including the Musée de la Cour d’Or in Metz, the German Historical Museum in Berlin, and the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, among others. His works continue to be valued for both their artistic quality and their strong historical significance. He died in Paris in 1932 and is buried in the Vaugirard Cemetery.
