Antique Rustic Still Life Oil Painting – Large 19th Century Birds, Game
A dramatic and exceptionally atmospheric large 19th-century French game still life by Gabriel Édouard Thurner (1840–1907). Depicting an arrangement of game birds against a wonderfully dark background, the painting combines remarkably expressive brushwork with the sombre palette associated with the great French hunting still-life tradition.
Several game birds are arranged across the composition, some suspended above while others rest upon the stone ledge below. Their overlapping wings and plumage create an almost sculptural mass through the centre of the painting, emerging dramatically from a deep brown-black background.
About Gabriel Édouard Thurner
Gabriel Édouard Thurner was born in Mulhouse in 1840 and later worked in Paris, where he died in 1907. He was a French painter associated particularly with floral still-life and animal subjects. His work reflects the strong nineteenth-century French tradition of closely observed naturalistic painting, with flowers in bloom, game, birds and other subjects providing opportunities for painters to demonstrate their skill in rendering plumage, texture and contrasting surfaces.
The painting is presented in good antique condition with visible age-related craquelure, surface wear and historic marks consistent with a large 19th-century oil painting. Please refer closely to the photographs for its current condition.
