A superbly painted large-scale Austrian portrait dated 1865, depicting an elegantly dressed woman adorned with pearls and floral details. Rich in colour, texture, and presence, this accomplished oil painting is signed. She wears layered pearl necklaces and holds a small bouquet of red berries, creating a striking contrast against the warm tones of her dress and the dark, understated background.

Dated 1865, the painting reflects the height of mid-19th-century Central European portraiture, where technical refinement, realism, and elegance were paramount. The artist demonstrates exceptional skill in modelling flesh tones, capturing the softness of skin, the weight of fabric, and the delicate sheen of pearls with precision. The sitter’s hairstyle, jewellery, and dress are consistent with fashionable bourgeois or aristocratic portraiture in the Austrian Empire during the 1860s. The composition balances intimacy with grandeur, her direct yet gentle gaze engaging the viewer, while the scale of the painting gives it commanding presence on the wall.

The work is signed and dated, though the artist’s name is unfortunately difficult to decipher. Very good antique condition with light age-related craquelure and surface wear consistent with age. Colours remain rich and well balanced. Canvas is stable and has recently been to a professional restorer for a cleaning and new varnish applied. The painting is housed in a lovely frame, whose simple yet substantial moulding complements the portrait without distraction and enhances its stately character.
