Large 19th Century French Floral Still Life. Eugène Faure (1822–1878). Circa 1870. Oil on Canvas
A striking large-scale French floral still life painted around 1870 by Eugène Faure (1822–1878), signed lower right. Rich in colour, movement, and painterly confidence, this impressive oil on canvas has recently been professionally restored and is presented in its original gilt frame with the original framer’s label still intact on the reverse.
This beautifully composed floral still life features a generous bouquet of blossoms arranged low against a softly textured background. Creamy whites, pale pinks, and deep red accents are handled with fluid, confident brushwork, allowing the flowers to emerge naturally from the surface rather than being tightly defined.
Painted around 1870, the work sits at the intersection of late Romantic naturalism and early Impressionist influence. The artist prioritises atmosphere, colour harmony, and painterly surface, using loose strokes and subtle tonal shifts to convey light and depth.
The scale of the painting is particularly notable. At nearly 35 inches (90 cm wide), it was clearly intended as a decorative statement piece rather than a modest cabinet picture. The composition feels balanced and expansive, with the bouquet given space to breathe within the frame. The original framer and restorer’s label remains on the back of the frame, from Hubert Van Rossom, Lille, a well-known regional specialist dealing in paintings, restorations, and framing.
Very good antique condition. Recently professionally cleaned and relined. Paint surface is stable and well preserved. Frame retains its original gilding with expected patina and minor wear. These interventions have stabilised the work and refreshed the surface while fully respecting its age and original character. The original framer’s/restorer’s label remains intact on the reverse. The work is housed in its original gilt frame, whose layered mouldings and warm patina complement the richness of the painting and enhance its decorative presence.
