A refined 19th-century French still life by Charles Albert Porcher (1834–1895), depicting fruit and a glass of red wine against a rich dark ground. Recently professionally cleaned and revarnished, this elegant oil painting is presented in its period gilt frame.
Porcher demonstrates a confident handling of texture and tone. The softness of the grapes contrasts with the glossy surface of the wine glass, while the fig’s interior is rendered with remarkable sensitivity. The restrained palette and controlled lighting give the painting a refined, almost contemplative mood.
The work has recently been professionally cleaned and given a fresh varnish by our restorer, revealing renewed depth and clarity in the colours while preserving its authentic antique character.

Artist Bio – Charles Albert Porcher (1834–1895)
Charles Albert Porcher was a 19th-century French painter active during the height of academic and realist traditions in France. Born in 1834, he became known for his finely executed still lifes and landscapes and carefully composed compositions. His work reflects the influence of French academic training, with a focus on tonal harmony, texture, and the subtle study of light across everyday objects. Porcher worked during a period when still life painting remained a respected genre within the French art world, balancing realism with painterly refinement. He continued working throughout the latter half of the 19th century until his death in 1895.
