Antique French Portrait Oil Painting of a Young Boy Circa 1930 in Wonderful Original French Frame
An expressive French portrait by a painter we believe to be Frédéric Dufaux (1852 – 1943). Painted likely around 1930, this powerful study of a young boy captures quiet emotion and realism with masterful sensitivity.
This finely painted portrait depicts a young boy gazing directly outward, his expression poised between strength and contemplation. The precise brushwork, subtle tones and restrained background highlight the sitter’s natural dignity. A student of the French Academic tradition, Frédéric Dufaux was known for his psychologically nuanced portrait studies that bridged realism and early modernity. This painting demonstrates his refined technique and command of light.
A note on the signature, Signed “Dufau” upper right. Obviously the signature is missing and "X" on the end which we suspect came off in a cleaning within the last 100 years. Stylistically the brushwork and colours match exactly to what the painter Frédéric Dufaux was painting late in his career. The signature also matches what he used toward the end of his life in the 1930s.
