Dated 1891 - Antique French Portrait Oil Painting of Italian Peasant Woman in Montparnasse Frame

Dating from the late 19th Century, a beautiful French portrait painting of a profile of an Italian woman. Signed with the initials G.R. and dated 1891. A painting is in the small-medium size, coming in at 19 inches tall (48cm) including the frame. The colours are amazing, both the painting and frame. Stylistically she's so interesting, love the geometric shape over the left sides. The colours, brushwork and shadows are great. In 1890, the profile portrait was a trending style in Paris. This colours and use of shapes is something we see more with Paris School in 1920 rather than Bordeaux 1891. The artist, G.R. was certainly painting ahead of his time. The frame is a traditional Parisian Montparnasse Frame. It is excellent quality, quite heavy and would have come from one of the more expensive Parisian framers.

The back certainly tells a very interesting story - The canvas retailer is from Bordeaux with a Parisian canvas manufacturer. It appears it's had a journey to Italy where there the tags shown are from at "L'Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte" (Venice Art Biennale) in 1952 as well as an Italian export stamp from the Italian Government when the painting left Italy. The Venice Art Biennale, founded in 1890, is one of the most important art fairs in the world, still going strong in 2025. For export In Italy, all serious artwork needs to be verified and authenticated by the Italian government before it leaves Italy so they have an accurate record of what it is and where it's going. They're quite afraid another Mono Lisa leaves without them knowing :). This piece has some small signs of it's age but overall good condition. It wasn't cleaned by our restorer but certainly appears to have been recently cleaned. Please see all photos.
