Antique Roses Flower Still Life Oil Painting, Signed and Gold Framed

A beautiful French floral still life by the female artist Léonie Barillot-Bonvalet (1853-1901), depicting a loose bouquet of creamy white and blush-pink roses against a wonderfully rich blue-green background. Signed lower left and presented in a striking carved and gilded frame, it is a particularly lovely example of the flower painting for which Barillot-Bonvalet became known.

Barillot-Bonvalet’s brushwork is free flowing. The petals are constructed from broad touches of pale paint rather than precise botanical detail, while the dark green foliage dissolves into the blue-green background. Two fallen red roses at the foot of the vase provide a small but beautiful counterpoint to the pale flowers above. Flowers were not incidental subjects in Barillot-Bonvalet’s career. Records of the famous Paris -"Salon des Artistes Français" show her exhibiting floral paintings including Roses et giroflées in 1889, Chrysanthèmes in 1890, Tulipes in 1893, Anémones in 1899 and simply Roses in 1900.

Good antique condition with age-related surface character and wear consistent with its age. The decorative gilt frame retains a beautiful aged surface with rubbing, marks and areas of historic wear that add considerably to its character.

About Léonie Barillot-Bonvalet
Léonie Barillot-Bonvalet was born in Montigny-lès-Metz in Lorraine and established herself professionally at a time when women still faced considerable barriers within the French art establishment. She studied under three notable painters: Jules Lefebvre, Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant and Léon Barillot. More significantly, the official Salon records identify her as a member of the Société des Artistes Français, and document her exhibiting repeatedly at its Paris Salons. Her Salon record reveals a clear specialisation in flowers. Alongside roses, she exhibited chrysanthemums, pansies, carnations, wallflowers, anemones and greenhouse flowers. This painting therefore sits very comfortably within the documented body of work she was exhibiting publicly in Paris.
