A beautiful Dutch maritime oil painting, signed and dated 1903, depicting a steam-powered vessel and traditional sailing boats navigating the choppy waters of the North Sea. Seabirds skim across the waves beneath a pale, atmospheric sky, capturing the lively character of the Dutch coastline at the beginning of the 20th century. Presented in a handsome ornate antique gilt frame with richly decorated borders. The complete signature and date is partially under the lower right rebate.

At the centre of the composition, a small steam vessel with a distinctive red, white and black funnel travels alongside a traditional fishing boat with raised sails. Dark smoke rises into the sky as the vessels make their way through rolling green-grey waves. The Netherlands has a particularly rich tradition of maritime painting, reflecting the country’s centuries-long relationship with fishing, shipping and international trade. The combination of the steam vessel, traditional fishing boats and restless North Sea gives the painting a wonderful sense of movement and historical character.

Good antique condition with age-related surface character consistent with its period. The antique gilt frame retains a beautiful historic patina, with expected rubbing, marks and minor wear to the decorative finish. The signature and date are situated close to the lower edge of the painting and are partially concealed when framed. An additional photograph shows the inscription with the painting removed from its frame.
