1930 Paris School Pastel of Carnations by R. de Valens, from Montmartre Paris Studio

A beautiful 1930 pastel still life by R. de Valens, created in his Montmartre studio at 22 Rue du Turgot. A refined and atmospheric work from the Paris School, produced in the very heart of the city’s artistic quarter.

This charming pastel presents a bouquet of carnations in delicate shades of white, blush, and rose pink, arranged in a tall green glass vase. The artist, R. de Valens, signed and dated the work 1930, and provided his studio address: 22 Rue du Turgot, Montmartre (Paris 9e).

This location places the work directly inside one of the most important artistic centres of the 20th century. In 1930, Montmartre remained alive with studios, academies, cafés, and galleries. Artists of the Paris School — painters, illustrators, and designers — lived and worked in these narrow streets, following in the footsteps of Montmartre legends: Picasso, Modigliani, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec.

Pastels from this period and neighbourhood are highly collectible, representing the quieter, more intimate side of Parisian modernism. The soft modelling of the petals, controlled diffusion of colour and the elegant oval composition all reflect the refined techniques taught in Montmartre’s independent ateliers.
