A larger size and dramatic Alpine School landscape dated 1864, depicting two mountaineers in the Austrian Tyrol with what is almost certainly the Krimml Waterfalls cascading behind them. A wonderfully atmospheric 19th-century oil painting rich in detail and narrative.
This striking mid-19th-century Alpine landscape presents a sweeping mountain view, rugged forest in the foreground, deep glacial valleys in the mid-distance, and the unmistakable white roar of the Krimml Waterfalls descending from towering peaks. Two mountaineers stand in conversation along the path, their clothing, ice picks and knapsacks giving the work a vivid ethnographic charm typical of Alpine School paintings and clothing traditional of Alpine Austrians in the Tyrol region of the mid-19th Century. Dating from 1864, this piece captures the fascination Europeans had with the dramatic geography of the Austrian Alps. Artists of the Alpine School embraced sublime mountain scenery, crystalline air, and human figures dwarfed by peaks. The style blends Romantic atmosphere with naturalistic observation, all of which is evident here, the purple-blue haze of distance, the snow-capped ridges, and the rolling layers of Conifer forest.
