This powerful Paris School portrait presents a male sitter shown bare-chested in profile, his head turned with quiet determination and introspection. The handling of paint is loose yet assured, with broad strokes modelling the anatomy and subtle tonal shifts defining the musculature, neck, and face. Painted around 1920 (We found it in Paris) the work sits firmly within the Paris School tradition, where classical training met modern sensibility of the French impressionist movement. The artist prioritises structure and form while allowing visible brushwork to remain part of the composition, a hallmark of studio studies and independent atelier practice, frequent in the Montparnasse area during this period.
Good vintage condition with light age wear consistent with early 20th-century studio work. Surface remains stable. Frame shows natural patina and minor wear, enhancing its authenticity.
The painting is housed in its original Montparnasse frame, richly moulded and finished in a pale, softly aged patina. The frame’s sculptural carving and worn surface beautifully complement the painterly character of the work and strongly reinforce its Parisian origins.
