Antique Botanical Oil Painting | Pink Hellebores in Gold Frame
A wonderfully elegant late 19th-century French floral still life painted on wood panel, depicting a delicate group of pale pink and white hellebores, also known as Christmas roses, growing naturally among their dark green leaves. Beautifully painted against a soft, almost misty background and presented in an exceptional deep antique gilt frame. Signed M. Fournier.
The composition has the character of a botanical portrait, yet the loose vegetation and earthy foreground keep it from feeling overly formal. The hellebores are particularly beautifully observed. Their petals shift subtly between ivory, pale rose, mauve and dusty pink, surrounding centres of warm golden yellow. Against the restrained grey-green background, the flowers have an almost luminous quality. Known commonly as Christmas roses, hellebores have been treasured in French gardens for centuries for their ability to flower during the winter months. Their slightly drooping blossoms and muted colouring make them an especially romantic subject for painting.
Good antique condition with age-related surface character consistent with its period. The substantial antique gilt frame retains a wonderful historic patina with rubbing, marks and small areas of wear and loss appropriate to its age.
