Antique Castle Landscape Small Oil Painting, 19th Century, Gold Frame
A small and atmospheric European landscape dating from the early 20th century, depicting the ruins of an old tower standing beside calm water beneath a mountainous landscape. Painted on artist’s cardboard and presented in its beautifully aged gilt frame, its tiny scale gives it the feeling of a treasured travel study.
At the centre of the composition stands a crumbling fortified tower, its warm reddish stone providing the painting’s principal point of colour. Beyond, a steep mountain rises into a hazy sky, with further architectural ruins just visible along the hillside.
Good antique condition with age-related surface wear consistent with its age. The artist’s board shows some historic wear, particularly toward the edges. The antique gilt frame has considerable patina, rubbing, marks and small losses, all contributing to its wonderfully timeworn character.
