Description:
Dating from around 1870 - A lovely painting of a beautiful view of the Pont au Change in Paris. The Pont au Change Constructed during the Second Empire, the current Pont au Change was rebuilt between 1856 and 1860 under the reign of Napoleon III, evident in the letter N, the imperial insignia adorning its structure. This antique French painting is naive in style but done by a very talented artist where we think painted naive out of stylistic preference. In the 1870s, the artistic community in Paris started showing a big revolt from the traditional academic norms forms that were heralded at The Salon and artists were actively trying to take their art in different directions. This artist clearly chose to use flat colours and a flatten perspective, highlighting symbolism and storytelling over technical perfection. This antique oil painting is in good condition for it's age and comes in beautiful antique gilt gold frame. This painting has recently been to the restorer for a professional cleaning and new varnish applied, ready to hang for another 100 years.
