Antique Cow with Calf in Landscape Oil Painting, Gold Framed
A beautiful late 19th-century pastoral landscape by Dutch-English artist Willem Frederik Hulk (1852–1922), depicting a cow and her calf beside a peaceful stretch of water, with more cattle grazing in the distance. The painting is presented in an exceptional, richly ornamented antique gilt frame and forms part of a matching pair of landscapes by the artist, each available separately.
The landscape is beautifully understated, with lush green grasses and trees gradually fading into the pale blue and golden tones of the distance. The intimate relationship between the cow and her calf gives the painting particular warmth, a characteristic subject of Hulk’s rural landscapes. Good antique condition with age-related surface character consistent with its period. The elaborate antique gilt frame retains a beautiful historic patina with expected rubbing, darkening, marks and small areas of wear to the gilded ornamentation.
Willem Frederik Hulk (1852–1922)
Born in Amsterdam in 1852, Willem Frederik Hulk belonged to a distinguished Anglo-Dutch family of painters. He was the son of the celebrated marine painter Abraham Hulk Senior (1813–1897), who provided his early artistic training, and the brother of fellow painter Abraham Hulk Jr. Following his father’s relocation to England, Hulk spent much of his career there, moving to England around 1870 and settling in Shere, Surrey, in 1882. He became particularly well known for his pastoral landscapes and paintings of cattle, finding inspiration in the quiet rural scenery of southern England. Hulk exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1876 and 1898, as well as at the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. His paintings beautifully reflect the Victorian appreciation for rural life, particularly the peaceful relationship between animals and their natural surroundings.
